Ce e dom’le emigrarea? / What is this emigration thing?

#14953km.

Well, you know that moment when you must follow your dream otherwise you are not feeling complete? How about that, mine was about moving away from Romania. Yes, I know, I call it “moving away from Romania” because I do feel like there is less pressure this way, psychologically speaking.

Why #Australia? That made me smile, just because this was not my first option. Don’t be surprised, but I initially wanted to become “Nordic” (as in Scandinavia), I wanted to live the “American Dream”, I wanted to fell the fresh air of Canadian mountains … and end up going to Australia. Must be the kangaroos …

#14953km. That is the distance between Bucharest and Melbourne (well, almost, direct end to end). It’s the 4th most distant city (having more than 1 million inhabitants). Sydney will go 2nd, but you know what, for some reason I`m not a fan of this city. Stay around, sometime soon enough I will let you know why. Auckland is clearly 1st when it comes to choosing the furthest place on Earth, departing from Bucharest, but my shortlist will have Australia going over New Zeeland. And I have my reasons for that:

  • warmer, aprox. 3.5°C – 19.8°C vs 16.3°C
  • it`s not so crowded, with a better (aprox. 46.21%) density – 1560 people/km² vs 2900 people/km²
  • (not so important at this stage) but it has more university (higher education) – 8 vs 5
  • cheaper, the public transport, aprox. 35$ – $104 vs $139
  • better unemployment rate, aprox. 1.7% – 6.2% vs 7.9%
  • higher GDP, with aprox. $321,3 billion: 356.2$ billion vs 34.9$ billion (now, for real, can you imagine 1 billion dollars? I am not sure I know how to write this number
  • … and the list go on. Have a look here if you are really interested in a side-by-side comparison

“Nordic” option has fallen due to hard to learn language, US has fallen due to Tramp, Canada due to cold weather … well, you guessed it, I am now in Australia. It wasn`t hard, wasn`t it? Yet still, I feel like you may have some thigs to add:

  • “yes, but why so far away?” – and you are 100% correct. It was my decision to go that far away from the European region due to my believes regarding the security of the EURO region
  • yes, but you are surround only by strangers” – the same as in Italy, France, Germany. You what makes the difference in Australia? We are all “strangers’ arrived from overseas. More than that, I am pretty sure there is less chance for you to be regarded differently due to your nationality
  • yes everything`s so expensive” – true, but income is also above average (if you are skilled). It is up to you to make the correct judgement and plan ahead
  • yes, but it is dangerous” – Australia “the country that wants to kill you”, this is part true part marketing (branding). More details about the possible concerns one may have, could be found here. Let`s be real though, I am planning to live in a city, surrounded by civilization, with access to medical services. Not planning on going into the wild desert any time soon. The most “dangerous” living being I found until now was that type of butterfly that fly around a source of light … there was no #snake, there was no #spider, there was no boxing kangaroo, there was no #crocodile, there was no #shark. Ok, I was not looking for it, that had to be said
  • yes, but …” and this can continue forever. You know what, take the challenge and tell me why not Australia? Comment below and I will make time to respond all of you
